Photographs of the H. Widayat Collection
Haji Widayat (1923-2002; from Kutoarjo, Central Java) studied at the Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts in Yogyakarta, Central Java, where he also became a lecturer after graduating. He helped to establish the Pelukis Indonesia Muda (Young Indonesian Artists) group in 1952 in Yogyakarta. In 1960 Widayat received a grant to study ceramics and traditional landscaping in Nagoya, Japan.
In 1994 he established the Museum H. Widayat located on the grounds of his home in Magelang, Central Java. Known for his cubism style, Widayat has received numerous awards such as Anugerah Seni Art Award from the Indonesian Department of Education, Lempad Prize, Asean Art Award, and the Budaya Upa Pradana Award from the Government of Central Java.
His works have been described as 'magical decorative' with their rhythmic repetitions of motifs derived from traditional and primitive arts. They are rich in texture, color, and symbolism.
