Prince Siddhartha enters manhood surrounded by luxury in three palaces built to shield him from suffering. To prevent his departure, King Suddhodana arranges a festival where Siddhartha falls in love with Yasodhara. After winning her hand by defeating rivals in archery, swordsmanship, and horsemanship—notably taming a wild stallion—they marry. Siddhartha lives in a "pleasant prison" of delight, unaware of old age, pain, or death.
