Book the Second

high-definition creative commons photographs from the Light of Asia, Book the Second, together with further information.

Prince Siddhartha enters manhood surrounded by luxury in three palaces built to shield him from suffering. To prevent his departure, King Suddhodana arranges a festival where Siddhartha falls in love with Yasodhara. After winning her hand by defeating rivals in archery, swordsmanship, and horsemanship—notably taming a wild stallion—they marry. Siddhartha lives in a "pleasant prison" of delight, unaware of old age, pain, or death.
