In Book the Third, Siddhartha ventures outside his secluded palace for the first time. Despite his father's attempts to hide the truth, the Prince encounters an old man, a diseased man, and a corpse. These sights shatter his illusions of eternal youth and joy. Realizing that all living beings are subject to age, sickness, and death, Siddhartha is overwhelmed by compassion and vows to find a way to end universal suffering.
