Book the Fifth

high-definition creative commons photographs from the Light of Asia, Book the Fifth, together with further information.

In Book the Fifth, Siddhartha lives as an ascetic near Rajagriha, practicing intense meditation and seeking truth. He challenges the extreme self-mortification of fellow hermits, advocating for a balanced path. After comforting a grieving mother (Kisagotami) and saving a lamb from sacrifice, he intervenes at King Bimbisara's court. He preaches against animal sacrifice, emphasizing compassion for all life. Though the King offers his kingdom, Siddhartha continues his quest toward Gaya.
